Founded in April 1959, Dixie Products is now a second generation family business that has consistently been nominated for Ethics in Business and top local small business awards. Dixie is a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the International Door Association (IDA) and the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association (HPBA).
This business was started in 1995 as Luxury Bath. Tracy White, the current owner, started as a designer, and then bought the business in 2012. He later severed his ties with Luxury Bath, in order to have the freedom to offer multiple lines of inventory. He then changed the name to Better Bathrooms & Kitchens to reflect his independence.

I started in home improvement as the son of intrepid DIY'ers that spent most three-day weekends building decks, painting, or landscaping. At fifteen I found my first paying gig as a summer laborer on a nearby framing crew. Since then, I have always worked in building in some form. My experience includes a civil engineering degree from Virginia Tech and license as a professional engineer, design and project management on municipal water and sewer systems, construction of a modest project in Sudan using compressed earth blocks, and multiple light frame building and remodeling projects.
Eric Sallee and Cliff Dowdy began the company in 1988. We owe a great deal to their vision and hard work to create the company that now continues their legacy. In 2005, Ed Tuchler who joined the team as a carpenter on this first home in 1988, purchased Shelter Alternatives, Inc. The company continues to grow and serve residents throughout the New River Valley. In 2016, we renovated our office in downtown Blacksburg. The 1920's farmhouse was remodeled to showcase many of the elements that embody a project by Shelter Alternatives and creates better workspaces for our staff. We look forward to continued growth in serving our community where we work, live and play. See our office addition here.
West Virginia does not require a homeowner to be a licensed contractor if they are doing work on their home. The homeowner must state this prior to commencing any work when applying for a building permit. If the homeowner does not do all the work himself, he must hire a contractor who is licensed by the State of West Virginia.
For more information or to check if a contractor has a valid state license, contact with the WV Division of Labor at (304) 558-7890 or visit Contractor Search page
